My name is Laura Leishman, and I am running for Villa Park Library Trustee because I am passionate about ensuring
that our library continues to be a cornerstone of learning, connection, and innovation in our community.
As the current President of the Friends of the Villa Park Library, I’ve worked closely with our library staff and
supporters to raise funds, advocate for essential programs, and bring engaging opportunities to our town. This role
has shown me the vital impact our library has on people of all ages.
I bring a unique perspective to this role. My background in STEM and Data Science equips me to advise the library
on technological advancements and strategic investments. Whether it’s expanding access to digital tools or
improving the library’s online services, I see tremendous potential to enhance how the library serves our community.
I’m also committed to preserving what makes our library special—its welcoming atmosphere and excellent
programming. At the same time, I believe we can build on this strong foundation by introducing fresh ideas to
engage younger audiences, modernizing services, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
I believe that libraries are more than just buildings filled with books. They are hubs for opportunity, inspiration, and
connection. By working together, we can ensure our library remains a vital resource for future generations.
I grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and graduated from Rolling Meadows High School in District 214. My
passion for learning led me to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Math, Chemistry, and Physics (2013). I continued my academic journey at the University of Notre Dame,
completing a Ph.D. in Physics in 2018.
Following graduate school, I sought a career where I could apply my analytical and critical thinking skills to
solve real-world problems. I found my calling in Data Science—a field that blends technology, creativity, and
problem-solving. Over the past seven years, I’ve built my expertise as a Data Scientist and, more recently,
have taken on leadership roles as I transition into management.
